There are so many reasons to visit Islay - watch the video below to see some of them...

Exploring Islay – whisky, wildlife and nature

There are so many things to do on Islay. Of course, there are all the whisky distilleries – all nine of them. And it is certainly worthwhile organising a visit to any one of them. Then there is the wildlife and nature. There is an abundance of it on this island, which many nature lovers flock to see. Otters, seals, deer and hare, not to mention the diverse habitats! Birdwatching is massively popular. There are two wonderful nature reserves from where you can see birds such as choughs, corncrakes, lapwings and more. And of course, the migrating geese are a show to behold. Puffins, gannets and birds of prey are just a few of the residents that inhabit this island.

Travel through time

Furthermore, Islay is steeped in history, dating back to Mesolithic times. A visit to the Islay Museum lets you travel through time and explore wonderful artefacts that have been found on the island. Items from the Bronze Age to shipwrecks in WW1 and WW2 leave you fascinated by the past goings on. Kilchoman Miltray Cemetery touches the soul when visited. Set in the most spectacular location above Machir Bay, are the rows of graves of the American soldiers from the Otranto shipwreck in 1918. There are so many historical sites to visit on this island, from all eras; it is awe-inspiring. Finlaggan is another spectacular place to visit and holds significant historical importance, having been occupied from very early times. The 14th and 15th centuries saw it as the administrative centre for the Lord of the Isles.

Beaches and walks

There are numerous beaches and walks to explore when visiting Islay. Twenty-three beaches line the coast. All equally dramatic in their own way. Most of them are sandy, but some are shingle. And if you enjoy swimming, there are some which are safe to swim from. The safest are Loch Indaal, Laggan Bay and Loch Gruinart. And many of these beaches are wonderful to stroll along and take in the beauty surrounding you. There are also many walking routes on Islay, and you can find a list of some of them here. Testimonials

Dundonald Cottage…very cosy cottage in a great location. The cottage is in the very heart of Bownore and is very well appointed. There is a large lounge with comfortable sofas and an open fireplace, which was lovely to sit in front of and enjoy a dram. The kitchen had everything you could need for your stay. The cottage was very clean and is well looked after. Would definitely stay there again.
